Keep an eye out for large bags of spring and fall planted tulips, daffodils, and other bulbs as a cost-effective way to add early spring color.

GROW LOTS OF GARLIC

Garlic is one of my favorite plants to grow. The flavor of homegrown garlic is unmatched—and I’m not talking just about garlic cloves, which are the most commonly consumed part of the plant. Garlic leaves, flowers, and bulbs provide unique culinary contributions that can be enjoyed through spring and early summer.

Your climate will dictate which type of garlic you’re able to grow. Hardneck varieties thrive in colder climates (permafrost is the only thing that can stop them) but fail to produce in warmer climates. The opposite is true for softnecks: They’re better suited for warmer regions. Each variety has a specific USDA Hardiness Zone range, so you’ll need to ensure you’ve selected one that’s suitable for your zone.
